A dog's brain is ready to learn at seven to eight weeks old. He's an eager sponge, ready to be filled with pleasing behaviors such as sit, down and come or with undesirable activities such as chewing on your couch. Even if your dog isn't fully capable of mastering a behavior -- he probably doesn't have complete bladder control at eight weeks, for example -- he can certainly be learning good foundations.

So many people ask why the average pet dog needs training. "Normal dogs don't need training," they think. "That's only for aggressive or destructive dogs. And I've had dogs all my life!"  The truth is, even family dogs need some training.

Everyone!

Anyone who lives with the dog is welcome to attend class and practice handling. Children old enough to focus (or practice and then quietly entertain themselves) for the hour of class are welcome.

People also frequently wonder when a dog is too old for training. I am fond of answering, "If the dog is still breathing, he's still learning!" We have welcomed eight- and ten-year-old dogs into class and seen them do quite well. Old dogs can and certainly do learn new tricks!

There is a great deal of controversy now on the subject of vaccinations and immunity; much of the conventional "wisdom" about vaccines has been disproven and newer protocols are still in discussion. You are not encouraged to ignore your vet's advice, but please make your own informed decision.
